Bahrain Para Badminton: Bhagat and Dhillon win gold as India await rich medals


 NEW DELHI: Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat won two gold medals on Saturday, leading the Indian badminton team's medal rush at the Bahrain Para-Badminton International in Manama.

Bhagat was caught off guard by his rival Daniel Bethell of England in the SL3 men's singles final as he teamed with Manisha Ramdass to defeat Thailand's Siripong Teamarrom and Saensupa Nipada in a duel at the top of the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles mixed doubles 21-14, 21: 11 defeat class.

World No. 1 Bhagat, who had recently settled for two bronze medals at the Brazil Para-Badminton International, recorded a convincing 21-16 21-14 win over fellow countryman and Paralympic bronze medalist Manoj Sarkar in the SL3 semifinals.

Tarun Dhillon also picked up a gold medal after defeating Korea's Shin Kyung Hwan 21-9, 21-9 in the SL4 men's final. The Indian had secured a 21:14 21:15 victory over Thailand's Siripong Teamarrom in the semifinals.


In women's singles, Mandeep Kaur (SL3) lost to Halime Yildiz 21-5, 17-21 to sign with a silver medal. She had achieved a shocking 21-18 21-14 victory over top seed and compatriot Manasi Joshi in the semifinals.

Among others, Dhillon and Nitesh Kumar also won the SL3-SH4 men's doubles semifinals, beating Korea's Hwan and Joo Dongjae in consecutive matches 21-18 and 21-18, respectively, and meet Thailand's Mongjon Bunsun and Siripong Teamarrom in the final.

On the women's side, Ramdass (SU5) and Mandeep Kaur (SL3) reached the women's doubles final SL3-SU5.

Second-seeded pair Kaur and Ramdass, who together have a gold medal from Brazil Para-Badminton International, meet Paralympic duo Palak Kohli and Parul Parmar in the final.

However, Parmar lost to Turkey's Halime Yildiz in the SL3 women's singles semifinals 21-5, 21-18.

Other Indian finalists include Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, who beat Thailand's Chai Saeyang 21-13, and 21-18 in the final round of SH6 women's singles.

Chirag Baretha and Raj Kumar also reached the SU5 men's doubles final, as did Dhinagaran Pandurangan and Sivarajan Solaimalai in SH6 doubles. Referral link
